Brioche Subs

Got the buns from M&S. They're really soft and buttery and keep well. Shall go get more!

Challah French Toast

Ahhhh... how I love challah... the rich moist eggy taste of homemade, braided bread. I made this bread two days ago and today it's just right to be transformed into French Toast.

Cue French Toast lover - Takoyaki, who asked for 3 slices, and got them!

Caesar Salad and Tuna Mayo Croissant

New bento item - Caesar salad! Consisting of mini Romaine lettuce, some homemade sourdough croutons, tomatoes and cashew nuts.

Salad usually takes up a lot of space even though there's so little actual matter, that I'm glad to have my new Zebra SS bowl to hold a substantial portion for RM's 10 min snack time in school. I put the dressing into a plastic disposable container and snapped the lid on, so even if the plastic container leaks, the dressing will not leak out of the box. Oh how I love my new box.

The Totoro box holds a croissant with tuna mayo and cucumber. That's for his recess.

Buns & Salad Bento

Storebought buns to save the day (for me) and some easy salad.

Omelette Sandwich

Yawn... I woke up early to make this fresh for Roast Meat.

Making the omelette was pretty quick - just chop onion, beat eggs, add peas, salt, fry. I took a nap on the sofa for... 15 minutes? while the omelette cooled. Then just assemble the sandwich, slice, take photo and Bob's your uncle.

Sourdough Focaccia Picnic Bento

I've been experimenting with sourdough in recent months, in the sense that many instant yeast bread recipes that are in my repertoire are being converted to sourdough recipes, using my almost-a-year-old sourdough starter as the leavening agent. I think I've found a pretty efficacious formula and it works with most yeast recipes.

Sourdough focaccia
Roast chicken drumstick

Tuna Mayo Sub on Sourdough

I am proud to present homemade Sourdough Baguette in today's bento. My relationship with sourdough baking has always been somewhat rocky, but yesterday we (sourdough and me) had a beautiful lovechild - mini baguettes.

The crust was crispy and chewy, while the crumb was light and sweet. Gotta bake this again!

Continental Breakfast Bento

The mini ham bun is from Four Leaves bakery and so is the croissant, which I stuffed with tuna mayo and cucumber. RM said it was incredibly delicious (most likely in the hope that I will make that for him again, ha!).

Stuffed Pita Pockets Inna Bento

I've finally found a new dish to add into our bento rotation menu! Stuffed with lots of meat and vegetables, these healthy homemade sourdough pita bread pockets barely made it into the bento.

This is my second time making sourdough pita bread, and although it takes a little longer time to rise than regular yeasted pita, they were absolutely worth the wait. I guess the same can be said for all sourdough breads. My homegrown sourdough starter is six months old and going strong!

Takoyaki had priority today as she has long combined recess so she got a full pita. These are stuffed with leftovers from our dinner - roast pork tenderloin, lettuce, alfalfa sprouts, cherry tomato, cucumber.

RM only has half a pita because that's all we had left, haha! He has an additional filling - canned tuna.

Pseudo Hotdogs

I've never liked to buy hotdog buns because firstly, it's hard to get wholemeal ones and secondly, the bread to filling ratio is just too high (why do we have to eat so much carb just to eat one sad sausage?).

It makes so much sense to just use sandwich bread, and you can eat the rest of the bread in so many other ways.

French Toast is a great way to use up stale bread

Especially homemade bread, which, without all those additives in commercial bread, doesn't stay soft as long. I have some sourdough bread which is perfect for turning into French Toast to feed those hungry wolves of mine.

This is Takoyaki's box, which consists of French toast, cherry tomatoes, cuke sticks and some ham cones. RM has the exact same foods in the Lego box, but in my half asleep state, I accidentally deleted the image on my phone instead of uploading it. Boohoo!

On a Roll-making Roll

Not sure what's come over me lately. I've been rather inspired and motivated to make rolls, first the crescent rolls, then now sausage rolls.

It helps that this meal, although simple, is all-in-one. In fact, RM brought two rolls today, one for recess and one for his field trip to the Science Centre.

Corn Rice?

I have no idea what to call this, hahaha! But Roast Meat (and his little brother) does love corn.

So I mixed some corn kernels into his rice (which means I don't have to add furikake). In the snack box are some grapes and a homemade crescent roll.

Why have Two when you can have Three?

I do apologise if this sounds like a Singapore campaign to have more babies.

But I really think three stars look so much better than two. And they fill up the space more nicely too. Perhaps if I show this to Mouse he will say the first one is Ga-jeh, the second one is Gorgor and the one at the back ('cos it looks smaller in the background) is him.

I was lazy at first to haul out the star egg mould with which I made these moulded buns (How To here), but then I remembered that sooner than I can believe, Roast Meat would be a teenager in Secondary School, and who knows whether he might reject all cutesy stuff then? So, better make now while he still doesn't complain.

On the side are two beef patties (recipe here) with ketchup in a twist of cling wrap, cherry tomatoes and a delicious clementine.

Kimchi Chicken Two Ways

For Takoyaki, with rice, steamed egg and tomato soup (made by her). She recently got her braces done, so her gums are very sore and everything has to be small (read: cut up) and soft. Poor thing, couldn't even eat her birthday party food. Yes, today is her birthday!

And in our standard pocket sandwich for Roast Meat.
