Always well-received by RM. The others won't touch it with a ten foot pole *roll eyes*

Slimy Chasoba Bowl
And again it's natto, cos I've run out of suitable proteins that BOTH kids will like.
Tossed together with the cooked and washed soba are enoki, natto, cucumber and tomatoes. And of course, the dipping sauce, which has become tossing sauce.

Cold Somen and Fried Stuff Bento
It's the June holidays but the poor PSLE-due Roast Meat has to go to school for supplementary classes and a science programme after that *sob sob* And what's more, the school canteen is not open after recess *sob sob sob*
So it's Mum to the rescue with a yummy, part healthy part unhealthy bento.
Menu:
Somen tossed with mentsuyu, julienned cucumber and cherry tomatoes
Fried chicken wings and fishball courtesy of Grandma

My Japanese Jiajiangmyun (Beef Soboro Udon) Bento
This was really easy, because I used up some beef soboro (Jap-style seasoned and fried ground beef) from a previous day's lunch which I'd store hygienically (but of course). So I just boiled the udon and tossed it with the soboro, then added the veggies on top.
RM had this for lunch because I had an appointment and after that, some errands to run, so couldn't be back in time to get him lunch.
I think it was a little greasy though (my fault when cooking the soboro). And customer feedback was not very positive although he could not exactly pinpoint the reason. I suspect it was because he ate it at room temp (about 2 hours after it was made) so the fat had kind of congealed.
Note to self: Serve this hot or at least warm.

Mee Sua Tng (Rice Vermicelli Soup)
Takoyaki is super thrilled to bring this today, cos this is absolutely one of her favourite foods of all time. Especially topped with crispy, crunchy, slightly sweet anchovies contributed by her Ah Ma... summer weather or rainy weather, she will always accept this. I bet she'd even eat this in the desert.
A traditional dish my family loves, method courtesy of my mum, who is a Teochew. The mee sua tng that my Hokkien MIL makes is very different, and involves frying lots of ginger in lots of sesame oil. We like that too, but I don't know how to cook it. This method is healthier but no less yummy.

Everyday Bento Week Day Five - Cold Udon with Natto
I have reached the last day of this week! Finally!
This bento was cooked just after midnight to absorb all the chilly essences of the night. Muahahaha... yes I think I'm going a little crazy.
I realise I myself have not eaten cold udon (or cold any noodles, for that matter) for a looooonngg time. Need to get back into that groove...

Instant Noodles for First Day of Term Two
Cos I didn't have anything else or any energy left after a volleyball session.
I "nutrified" it (is there such a word?) with peas, surimi and freshly made kimchi.

Tom Yum Noodles. By request.
RM had no school today and we planned to have instant noodles for brunch, so when Takoyaki heard she decided she wasn't going to miss out! Cos we seldom have instant noodles.
My version of Tom Yum noodles is cooked with chicken soup noodles and tom yum paste instead of the tom yum flavoured instant noodles which are usually... too spicy and too little in terms of sustenance. She likes this better also, although I added too much nam prik pao (tom yum paste) and she texted me from school to complain... hee....

Japchae Bento
For Takoyaki. I was so thankful I had these ingredients, because she threw a bomb at me late last evening that she had to stay back in school and I didn't have any planned overs. Cooking this took about 15 minutes excluding cooling time so I had, after Mouse had gone to bed, to whip it up.
The ingredients are sweet potato noodles, ground beef and baby bokchoy 小白菜. Not very authentic but at least the taste was near enough.

Beat Summer with some Cool Noodle Salad!
June and July have been two months of oppressive heat and sudden, short downpours for Singapore this year. However, high temperatures are the norm so I decided to toss up some cold udon salad for both my critters.
First, I cooked some dried udon, washed it well, then added julienned Japanese cucumber, halved cherry tomatoes, sesame oil, a dash of homemade mentsuyu (Japanese dipping sauce) and natto, and mixed them well into a big bowl of slime. Next, I portioned it out into each critter's box.
Takoyaki's has Japanese seasoned jellyfish (chuka kurage) on top.
While Roast Meat has shredded surimi crabsticks.

And hey! There's some slimy noodle salad left for me to devour today. Yay!

Monday already...
Aaaand I've run out of rice and bread. So it's down to instant noodles aka yakisoba. To go with some roast chicken chunky salad.
I'm probably feeling a little guilty but I daresay these two jokers will be in seventh heaven when they open their boxes.

Tri-coloured Cold Udon Salad
I was going to toss it up, then realised it would look more colourful and appetising this way. This is for Takoyaki.
Cooked fresh wheat noodles are tossed with kaeshi (short cut for me), then topped with (from left):
Homemade salmon flakes
Julienned cucumber
Omelette strips

干捞素面 Cold Somen Salad
A delicious cool summer lunch for RM who has to stay in school for supplementary classes.
A small snack box of CNY goodies for his 10 min break in class. Counts as healthy?

Happy 2015!
I'm all geared up to bento! (surprisingly, haha). For the first day of school, although it's just one day (Friday), I decided to give Roast Meat a bento because our school is beginning single session this year and we all don't know what's going to happen at recess or how the timetables are going to work out. And RM can't do without his food! He might cry if he doesn't fill that empty hole in his stomach...
So here's a simple toss 'em all together box with somen, homemade salmon flakes, edamame, Taiwanese sausages, shredded lettuce and cherry tomatoes. I had the leftovers last night when I was making it and it was GOOOOOD.
Wishing everyone a blessed and energetic 2015! May we all find the strength in us to bento no matter what!

Sino-Jap Bento - Cold Udon with Chinese Stir-fried Greens and Surimi
The weather see-saws between rainy and hazy-hot every few days so I wasn't sure whether I should give it to him or not. It's always a gamble, and I was lucky this time. Lovely hot sunshine for Roast Meat to enjoy his cool noodles.
