The main meal is sourdough pita stuffed with chicken mayo and Japanese cucumber slices.

Stuffed Pita Pockets Inna Bento

I've finally found a new dish to add into our bento rotation menu! Stuffed with lots of meat and vegetables, these healthy homemade sourdough pita bread pockets barely made it into the bento.

This is my second time making sourdough pita bread, and although it takes a little longer time to rise than regular yeasted pita, they were absolutely worth the wait. I guess the same can be said for all sourdough breads. My homegrown sourdough starter is six months old and going strong!

Takoyaki had priority today as she has long combined recess so she got a full pita. These are stuffed with leftovers from our dinner - roast pork tenderloin, lettuce, alfalfa sprouts, cherry tomato, cucumber.

RM only has half a pita because that's all we had left, haha! He has an additional filling - canned tuna.

For Takoyaki, with rice, steamed egg and tomato soup (made by her). She recently got her braces done, so her gums are very sore and everything has to be small (read: cut up) and soft. Poor thing, couldn't even eat her birthday party food. Yes, today is her birthday!

If you've been bentoing for some time, you most probably know about this cool pocket sandwich maker, a cheap but useful implement obtainable from Daiso.

I realised I could use just one slice of bread instead of two (if someday I discover I only have one slice left, haha) to make a dumpling-style pocket.

All you have to do is fold that one slice over on itself (with the filling inside) and press down on the pink part as per normal.

The little brown patties in Takoyaki's box are Quinoa patties. She doesn't like quinoa on its own but these quinoa patties taste almost like beef patties. I'll share the recipe another day.

Kimchi Chicken Pocket Sandwiches

For the last school day of this week (for Roast Meat, since tomorrow is the Children's Day holiday), RM requested for these sandwiches which I think I once made him... last year? at home.

He wanted TWO pocket sarnies, which I originally agreed to give him, but then I remembered that one pro of bento is portion control. RM is somewhat overweight so overeating is definitely a no-no.

Hence, I just packed whatever could fit snugly inside his box, and honestly this should be mighty filling for a 10yo's recess.

This is a 650ml box.

First Day of Term 3, 2013

It was with a weary heart that I faced this day. Ahh... no more late nights!

Thankfully, I didn't have any nightmare last night about waking up late for school this morning as was my wont, and bento-making proceeded comparatively smoothly (meaning the tot didn't wake up).

I decided to use the new Totoro box for RM today. I hope he takes good care of it. Simple stuff - PB sandwich pocket, seaweed chicken, edamame and a clementine.

Takoyaki is very happy to face this new day, because for the first day of Term 3 they are actually going to the zoo for a field trip! Wow... She asked for some store bought sausage buns to share with her group at the zoo, as well as some strawberries.

The evils of advertising... A box like this comes free with every purchase of two boxes of Darlie toothpaste. We got two boxes d:)

It's a good size, 600ml, one which I've been wanting to get from Daiso for quite some time, for packing bigger stuff such as pocket sandwiches and toast. Love the headroom on this one, same as my Lock&Lock boxes, which means longer picks can stand upright. There's a steam vent for microwave reheating (which we won't use, of course), but there's no silicone or rubber seal, so the box is not watertight.

Roast Meat brought a Nutella-filled pocket sandwich, some seaweed chicken, cherry tomatoes and grapes to school this morning.

Here's a new tool! It's a pocket sandwich maker. It's much smaller than I expected, but it fits just nice onto a normal slice of sandwich bread.

So since I have this new tool, I must use it right? Mr Roast Meat will be having a pocket sandwich made using the super kawaii bear sando maker. It's filled with leftover roast chicken mixed with some Jap mayo (not sweet), and the features are 2 M&Ms, a dollop of Nutella for the nose and ketchup for the mouth. On the side are some salad (kosong, he doesn't want ANY dressing, weird boy), and grapes.

I hope you eat properly Mr Roast Meat!

Egg sandwiches day

I made the same thing for both kids the night before and put them all in the fridge. Just hardboiled eggs mashed with butter, pepper and chopped spring onions. And here's a tip for peeling hot hardboiled eggs quickly:

Drain the cooked eggs and transfer them into a plastic/metal container with a watertight lid that is 1/3 filled with cool water. Replace the lid and shake the box gently but firmly for about a minute. With a little practice you will know how hard to shake the box. Remove the lid and gently peel off the shells which should be cracked and falling off by now. I learnt this from a cool Japanese show.

I used my nifty little Daiso pocket sando maker to form the things. Takoyaki had some fruits to complement the meal.

Cough cough - no heaty pls!

So kids are all coughing again (no thanks to the FIVE slices of Secret Recipe cakes we brought back from JB yesterday, of which 4 were chocolate). So I couldn't fall back on my heaty stash of Quadrattini and pork floss rolls. Here's Takoyaki's snackbox this morning.

I have five boxes of pretty, decorated Aluminium foil from $2 shops; I went a little bento-crazy. It's hard to control yourself when you are staring at the pretty things at the store, and your mind is telling you, you don't have these designs... it's just $2 per box anyway... you will be able to use them up...  Argh. I managed to walk away... for now.
