Brioche Subs

Got the buns from M&S. They're really soft and buttery and keep well. Shall go get more!

When the Sandwich is not the Star

I realise there's just no way to display sandwiches without cutting them up, which, sometimes I just don't feel like doing.

That's why the main star today is the snack box, which, according to the timetable, RM will eat at about 9.30am during lessons. It's their 10-minute in-class snack time, to help stave off the hunger before their rather late recess at 11am.

The stuff that are in the snack box are - apple chunks, feta cheese chunks, cherry tomatoes and olives. I had mine kind of deconstructed, as I was preparing the box, hahaha...

Steak on MultiGrain

A very simple one for DH (yay!) consisting of planned over thinly sliced ribeye steak on buttered country bread from the store.

The sandwiches look horrible wrapped like that, but I had no choice because otherwise the meat would all fall out.

Omelette Sandwich

Yawn... I woke up early to make this fresh for Roast Meat.

Making the omelette was pretty quick - just chop onion, beat eggs, add peas, salt, fry. I took a nap on the sofa for... 15 minutes? while the omelette cooled. Then just assemble the sandwich, slice, take photo and Bob's your uncle.

Sandwiches for Midweek

I found a new type of sandwich bread by Gardenia called Extra Fine Wholemeal bread so decided to give it a go. Kids reported "ok!" about the texture, maybe since it went with their favourite honey baked ham.

I am loving these sandwich packs from Daiso! They are just the right size for my sandwiches.

Sandwiches Poles Apart

Here are two different types of "sandwiches" - a standard egg mayo sandwich aaaaaannndd... onigirazu!

Yes, the diligent mum has once again gone rather bonkers and prepared two different bentos for her two fussy (and opposite) children.

First up is the new sensational Onigirazu. This time I made with Thai Jasmine rice (leftover) as an experiment, to see whether, since the whole thing is bound up with nori, it will do as well as Japonica rice. We shall await the feedback of Roast Meat. The fillings are surimi crabstick and a one-egg square omelette made with my tamagoyaki pan. Looks rather like two three-eyed aliens.

I was reading JustOneCookbook's bento posts recently and was at first inspired to make Ajitsuke Tamago, but then I remembered that Takoyaki doesn't like that (the fusspot!). So the egg ended up getting hardboiled and mixed with Kewpie mayo.

Sardines VS Bak Gua

Bak Gua sandwich for Takoyaki who does not like sardines. Most fish, actually. Fusspot. I enjoyed myself impaling the tomatoes onto the sandwich. Muahahaha...

Tomato sardine pocket sandwich for RM. It was fun to take my pocket sandwich maker out of storage.

Clear Your Fridge and Pantry by making Bentos!

Here I am trying to use up all our planned overs and leftovers, so we have two different bentos for two kids.

A chicken liver pate sandwich, Babybel cheese and some salad for RM.

And chicken stew over rice and kimchi for Takoyaki.

Two Different Sandwich Bentos - Why do I do this to myself?

Aaaand here we are at another special episode of Two Different Bentos for Two Different Fussy Kids.

Granted they have certain same elements, but the overall concept is rather different.

Takoyaki is bringing her share of the patties to share with friends (if she and they so desire), plus a PB and Lingonberry Jam sandwich. Oh and I included chocolates for sharing.

Roast Meat, on the other hand, had patties yesterday so "I don't want to eat the same thing, Mum". Oh, these fussy children! So upon the suggestion of Takoyaki, I fried a leek omelette which was essentially the filling for HIS sandwich. If I had to go cook some other carb such as noodles I think I would scream.

It was tough trying to pack it in neatly and I almost couldn't close the box.

Great practice for the annual Bento&Co contest! More details here. Alas, I will not be joining it this year because I have absolutely no inspiration or mojo. Not that it would make any difference. My bentos cannot make it.

Amazing how good Messy can look Bento

Just simple sandwiches in one half of the box, and an "artistic" (haha) mess of tamagoyaki, cherry tomatoes, and broccoli florets in the other half. Traffic light colours all over the place.

Kimchi Chicken Two Ways

For Takoyaki, with rice, steamed egg and tomato soup (made by her). She recently got her braces done, so her gums are very sore and everything has to be small (read: cut up) and soft. Poor thing, couldn't even eat her birthday party food. Yes, today is her birthday!

And in our standard pocket sandwich for Roast Meat.

Bacon Sandwich Bento

I do believe this is a first for me. Upon request from Roast Meat, I simply toasted two slices of bacon in the toaster till desired doneness and slipped them between slices of multi-grain bread. I was too lazy to even cut up the small apple into convenient slices for him.

My excuse is - toothache. I didn't sleep the whole night and quickly telephoned for an appointment with my dentist. I ended up with surgery, but that story does not belong on a bento blog.

CNY break coming up!

We certainly are looking forward to the lovely four and a half day weekend which begins on Wed afternoon.

One and only bento for this week - bak kwa sandwiches, gold coins (tamagoyaki) and apples.

Wishing all bento'ers a blissful and healthy Year of the Goat!
