Meow... Cat Onigiri Bento

I have a new toy!!

This is the cat version of the panda onigiri maker that was all the rage sometime back. A close friend went to Japan recently (hanami!) and got this for me, as well as some picks, which I have also used in today's bento. Thank you XH, you are so sweeet! *muaks*

It's surprisingly easy to use, as long as your nori is crisp. I thought I wouldn't kyaraben again untill Mouse hit school but I really couldn't resist this d:)

In the words of Takoyaki, "that's a face palm", or to put it more aptly, a paw-palm.

Happy New 2016!

Aaaand... we are back! First day of school, a brand new start for both Takoyaki and Roast Meat.

Takoyaki brought a full bento for her first day of school, on which there was a long, combined recess for the whole school - an onigiri, a roast chicken thigh and the usual veggies.

This second box looks rather substantial but it's actually only a box for RM's mid-morning 10-minute snack. A mini onigiri, cheese cubes and grapes.

Onigirazu

I have jumped on the bandwagon. Here is my first try at the latest bento craze in Japan - Onigirazu.

Onigirazu are simply a rice sandwich, wrapped with a sheet of nori. Why are they better than the traditional onigiri? Well, they have substantially more filling (which we love!) and they are soooo much easier to make than onigiri. You can use ANY filling you like, the possibilities are endless! One strange one which we saw was kimchi over sliced cheese, which seemed rather... weird to us.

There are many vids and sites on how to make onigirazu online. Check them out!

I've just done something simple - kimchi chicken (planned over) with corn kernels.

I stopped buying nori sheets for quite some time because I don't often make makizushi and the rest of the pack just went soggy after a while. Now I'll be buying this again since it's so simple to make onigirazu!

Sausage Salad?

Sounds weird, but tastes nice. After all, if you can have ham in a salad, why not sausage?

A very simple one for Takoyaki, who, due to "combined recess" does not like to queue up for a long time to buy food.

New Onigiri Wrapper!

Look what I found at Daiso!

I've previously seen it on some online bento store and wanted to get my hands on it. Here I have used it to wrap some round riceballs for Takoyaki and Roast Meat.

Love the cute animals! However, one wrapper can ideally hold only a small ball of rice to be effectively tied up, so to hold enough rice for my two big eaters, I will need to use two each. More work, hahaha.

Aaaaand... Onigiris make their early appearance

Together with Tamagoyaki, of course. One set each for Takoyaki and Roast Meat.

Planned over Onigiri and Pork Jerky

Weird, eclectic selection of foods. Who cares? They're all yummy.

March Hols Ahead

After a hot and tiring Sports Day for RM yesterday, today is the last day of Term One. Yay! We are looking forward to some rest in the week ahead, perhaps a spot of shopping in Malaysia, and catching up with some revision and Scouting. Did I mention that RM is a Cub Scout? Well, he has lots of badgework to catch up on.

Today's menu consists of an onigiri mixed with homemade salmon flakes, cheese and some grapes.

Happy hols and see you one week later!

This is turning out to be Onigiri Week

Yup. No one's complaining, except maybe my husband who had to wash the rice moulds. Haha!

We love Onigiris!

Hands down, my kids' favourite bento food. They NEVER refuse when I offer this. Today, it's paired with some planned-over teriyaki chicken and fruits. Satisfying...

Salted Onigiris

RM has always complained about plain onigiris so I tried the age-old method of salting the onigiris on the outside to add some flavour. However, he reported that he didnt taste anything different. What am I missing??

And we come to our second bento staple... Onigiri

This is why it is important to cook extra rice for dinner the night before. So easy to just mix in some furikake and pack into a riceball wrap.

Snack box:
Prawn rolls and cheese
White and round Mystery item

Recess box:
Jack Skellington apple
Ham flower
Cuke sticks
White and odd-shaped Mystery item

Crustless Quiche

Which is what I made with the extra filling and eggs for Tuesday's Mini Quiches. No crust this time, lazy.

Flower onigiris with furikake and quinoa
Crustless quiche
Cukes

Monday Already??

I just realised that my last post was exactly one week ago. The rest of the week was bento-free, other than a very simple breadroll-and-chicken set for Takoyaki, as last Friday was Roast Meat's birthday. Hence, from Wednesday on, I was running around procuring ingredients to bake cupcakes for his celebration in school. Phew... Glad it is all over. It was a rather trying week for me as I was having some gastroenteritis on top of running around for some Parent Volunteer projects. Two more weeks and I'll be able to watch all my burdens roll down the hill!

Today's lunch menu:
Onigiris with mixed furikake
Tamagoyaki
Cucumber ribbons and cherry toms salad
Grapes

I have found two more bento recruits! Will be meeting with them soon to talk bento. Yay!

Thankful Tuesday - Chimera Sausage and Ghost Onigiri

Did you have a good rest over the long National Day weekend? I ate something that caused a violent allergic reaction in my body and was in horrible pain for 24 hours, but thankfully it cleared up on its own so I did not go to the doctor.

And hence I felt rather in the mood to beautify things a little.

The little ghost there has NOTHING whatsoever to do with the current Lunar Month. I'd wanted to do a Totoro like I did once but lacked the motivation to do all the details beyond cutting the nori so I changed it to a Pacman type ghost.

The onigiri contains some pork floss and the rest of the food are some chimera sausages made up of cherry tomatoes, cucumber and bratwurst.

Bon appetit!

Onigiris

For when I don't want to do anything fancy and there's lots of plan-over rice.

We have reached Friday... Finally

Low on energy and mojo. Barely managed to complete the tamagoyai.

Same for both kids.

Friday Brunch In School

I was invited by Takoyaki's Sec One class to join them for brunch this morning, and parents were asked to bring some food to share. So I made some sushi and a special onigiri for her.

Here's the onigiri. I learnt this from my friend Maysatch, although she used ham while I used cheese. Actually I made two of these, the first one going to my neighbour who adores Totoro. Takoyaki was just lucky d:)

And I couldn't forget Roast Meat, of course, who loves sushi. He wouldn't have let me d:O
