2014 Term 2 Week Two - Releasing the bonds

I agree that it takes some time to get the momentum going again after the holidays. Usually I'm ridden with a sense of guilt if I have been sloppy in bentoing, and flagellate myself into putting in more effort for the next week.

Hence, it is with some pride that I present, for the first bentos of this week, Fly Lice. Did more grocery shopping over the weekend so I'm a little more prepared for this week. Don't expect any fancy stuff though - that's only going to be possible after we haved settled into our new home (expected end Jun).

Ham for Takoyaki and Prawns for RM
Why make two bentos when you can make three? This will be lunch for Mouse and me today.

Ham AND prawns for me and Mouse muahahaha!

2014 Term 2 Week One - Tied

I brought some bento tools and boxes with me to our temporary living quarters for the next 4 months. However, due to the lack of space, not to mention my not wanting to dirty or touch too much of the houseowner's stuff, I've tried to keep things as simple as I can.

Both Takoyaki and Roast Meat brought simple stuff like onigiris and store-bought buns, plus my usual bento staples of fruits, veggies and toastable chicken.

I finally got up some mojo to cook some side dishes from scratch for RM on Friday, to go with the planned over rice. Grilled shrimps and tamagoyaki are always easy to cook in a pinch. And I MADE SURE I brought my tamagoyaki pan with me d:)

Frightful Friday - Cold Natto Udon

And that's the last one made in this house because tomorrow we are leaving this house. I'd contemplated getting him to buy in school so I can pack the bentos away, but he's going for a field trip after school so he'd be sick of eating the same food twice in the same day (doting Mummy talking).

Truth be told, I'm glad to close up this chapter with a bento I'd be pleased to eat d:)

Tired Thursday - CCCCC

Which stands for Chocolate Chip Cookies & Cheddar Cheese. Which RM is always very happy with, especially if they're my CC cookies d:)

Wellness Wednesday - PBN Sandwiches

This is new to us - instead of PBJ (peanut butter and jelly), we are doing PBN (peanut butter Nutella)!

To be had with some Taiwanese sausages and cherry tomatoes.

Thankful Tuesday - Hainanese Chicken Rice Bento

I was planning on taking a break from bentoing on Monday night but remembered just in time that Takoyaki needs bentos on Tuesdays and Fridays because according to her, "The queues at combined recess are horrendously long!"

My last homecooked Chicken Rice dinner in this house *sob sob* as we are moving out this Saturday (and less than 50% packed! Gosh!).

Finally Friday - Pressed Sushi Again! (Real this time)

After yesterday's rather failed attempt, I decided to give my new toy another go, but this time, without the nori and with better fillings.

Oshizushi with egg sheet and pork floss

The middle layer is a thin egg sheet seasoned tamagoyaki style. So it's just one layer of rice, then the egg sheet, then more rice, and finally pork floss on top. My cutting skills suck though.

We will know whether she liked it or not tonight.

Penitant Thursday - Pressed Maki

To make up to Roast Meat for the simple stuff yesterday, I tried something new. It was supposed to be pressed sushi (oshizushi), but I was too lazy to get the sushi vinegar out, so it just became pressed maki. Whatever you wanna call it.

Here's my new toy - a pressed sushi maker.

And here's the final result.

Note to self - do not use big crumbly fillings such as corn kernels. They are hard to cut without falling out of position. Both RM and Mouse had a great time picking up the dropped pieces though d:)

Wellness Wednesday - Shamefully Simple Bentos

Because I was out of energy, both bentos for RM and Minnie were really simple. Not worth looking at, really. This post is simply for my record.

Roast Meat had a couple of Nutella rolls and some cheese cubes. The apple is separate because "I don't want to open up my whole bento in class Mum, so please pack the fruit separately."

Plan-Over Monday - Miso Hotpot

Except their miso hotpot is actually a thermal food jar, hahaha!

We had miso hotpot for dinner last night, so I made sure we had some pork slices and mushrooms left over. Just heat up in the morning and throw into the jars. Chopchop. Only extra thing I had to do was boil some dried udon for Roast Meat since he didn't want rice (the fussy feller). Oh, and I also blanched some green beans.

Pork Ribs & Radish Soup

This will probably be Takoyaki's last chance to bring this soup to school, since this is the last time I'm cooking it before we move house. Yes, we are moving to a temporary abode in mid-March, and I am still contemplating which of my (numerous) bento tools and boxes I'm going to bring!

It's hard to leave any one piece out, since they are all like my precious family members, haha! But I do acknowledge that some of them have become rather "distant relatives" since I don't use them so much, so I'll just have to put them into long-term storage i.e. packing boxes, till we move to our new home in end June.

Although it will be tough, I do still hope to bento as much as I can while we are living out of suitcases (literally!).
